GIS CERTIFICATION PROGRAMS
What is the difference between a GIS Certificate and GIS Certification? According to GISCI's website, a certificate is "an award given to an individual recognizing completion of an academic or training program" whereas certification is "a process, often voluntary, by which individuals who have demonstrated a level of expertise in the profession are identified to the public and other stakeholders by a third party. It is designed to recognize expertise." There are currently two institutions the offer GIS Certification, the GIS Certification Institute and ESRI.
What is the difference between the two? According to ESRI, "Esri Certifications are based on the use and best practices of Esri products and complement the Geographic Information Systems Professional (GISP) certification. A GISP is a certified geographic information systems (GIS) Professional who has met the standards for ethical conduct and professional practice as established by the GIS Certification Institute (GISCI). The GISP is not based on or affiliated with any specific product or technology. If you are not sure which one is best for you, start by reading the article in ArcNews "GIS and Technical Certifcation Programs are Complementary."
